In Hyderabad, amidst controversy surrounding the purity of Tirupati laddu, craftsmen at the base of Tirumala hill are preparing to apply for a geographical indication tag for their intricate wooden statues of Lord Balaji and other deities. The Madhavamala wood carvings are renowned for their detailed work depicting various gods and goddesses, as well as household items such as doors, windows, furniture, and children's toys. The Sri Balaji Wood Carvings Mutually Aided Cooperative Society Limited, representing 510 artisans from 309 families, will submit the application with NABARD's assistance. This would be the 20th geographical indication application from Andhra Pradesh, as noted by GI practitioner Subhajit Saha.
